On October 3rd through November 1st at the Dolphin Gallery & Gift Shop in Gualala (with an opening reception scheduled from 1:00-3:00 pm on opening day), award-winning artists, Harrison Goldberg and James Docker will present “The Art of Boro,” a joint exhibition of small works on paper and wood inspired by the iconic Japanese art form.
“Boro” is a traditional Japanese art form of repairing, patching and layering worn textiles out of necessity. The word translates to “tattered rags,” turning every day survival into a stunning visual history on cloth.
The technique was practiced throughout the Edo period (1603-1868) and well into the Meiji era (1868-1912). It was a way for rice farmers, fishermen, carpenters and other members of the working class to repurpose and restore new life to their worn and tattered garments thus transforming scarce textiles into artful patchwork representations of resilience and resourcefulness.
The pairing of Goldberg’s small improvisational collages with Docker’s exquisitely designed and rendered wood fabrications is more than a “Boro” metaphor. It highlights the strong influence that Japanese art has exerted for Centuries on Western culture, in this case from textiles to paper to wood.
